The Phi Phi Islands. Instagram heaven. A millennial dream since Leonardo DiCaprio strolled through them in The Beach. Thailand’s quintessential island destination. A place everyone wants to visit on vacation.

But how do you actually get there? Spoiler: there’s no airport. Like any tourist hotspot, though, there are plenty of transport options. Phuket is the best starting point—a peninsula worth visiting in itself, and very close to Phi Phi.

Even though the islands are nearby, there are details you should know before heading off. How long does it take? How much does it cost? Speedboat or ferry? From which area is it best to depart?

How long does it take to get from Phuket to Phi Phi?

Not long, really. Travel time depends on the type of transport and your budget, as well as other uncontrollable factors like weather. Basically:

  • Speedboat: 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • Ferry: 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the weather and company

So yes, Phi Phi is quite close. In fact, it’s one of the most popular day trips from Phuket (though we recommend staying at least one night… or five).

How to get from Phuket to Phi Phi: transport options

There are several ways to cross from Phuket to Phi Phi, and all involve the sea. The faster and more comfortable you want to go, the more you’ll pay. A classic. The good news: none of the options are complicated. The main choices are:

Ferry

The classic and most economical option. Multiple daily departures usually leave from Rassada Pier (near Phuket Town).

  • Ideal if you’re not in a hurry
  • Generally more stable than a speedboat (important if you get seasick)
  • Journey takes around 2 hours
  • Great option if you have lots of luggage

Speedboat

For those who want to get there quickly, cutting travel time roughly in half. Speedboats also depart from Rassada Pier, with some leaving from beaches like Ao Po or even directly from hotels.

  • Travel time: 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on sea conditions
  • Fewer people on board, but bumpier ride due to smaller vessels
  • More expensive, but saves time
  • Definitely the best option if you’re spending only a short time in Phi Phi and want to maximize it

Private charter

Traveling with a group or want a VIP experience? You can hire a private boat for you and your friends. Higher cost, but total flexibility with schedules and routes. Arriving in Phi Phi on your own boat, without crowds, doesn’t sound bad either.

How much does it cost to travel from Phuket to Phi Phi?

Prices vary depending on the season, type of transport, and whether you book online or through a local agency. Approximate prices:

  • Ferry: 350–600 THB (~€10–15)
  • Speedboat: 900–1,500 THB (~€25–40)
  • Private boat: from 10,000 THB (~€250+) depending on size and duration. Sharing the cost with a group can make it more reasonable.

Tip: Check if the price includes hotel-to-pier transfer, as some operators provide it and others don’t.

Is it better to depart from Phuket Town or Patong Beach?

It depends on where you’re staying and the type of experience you want:

  • Phuket Town (Rassada Pier): the main departure point. If you’re nearby, it’s cheaper and easier.
  • Patong Beach: more touristy, usually requires transfer to the pier. Some private tours depart from here, but it’s less common for public ferries.

In short:

  • For standard ferries or speedboats, Phuket Town is best.
  • If you’re in Patong and want convenience or a private tour, check options departing directly from there (or with hotel pickup).

Traveling from Phuket to Phi Phi is easy, quick, and affordable. The scenic views alone make it worthwhile, but if you’re also going diving with DPM Diving or exploring the islands, we promise it will be a journey you won’t forget.
