We all look for that little piece of paradise where we can lose ourselves for a while (even if it’s just for a few days) and remember it for the rest of our lives. And interestingly, this idea of paradise often shares a few common factors: white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a relaxed vibe. A true tropical paradise. That’s why today we’re going to talk about one we know very well here at DPM Diving: the Gili Islands. This small archipelago in Indonesia, just off the coast of Bali, is a true dream destination for divers, backpackers, and travelers seeking peace and quiet.
In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know before visiting the Gili Islands: which of the three to choose, how to get there, what to do, and more. Let’s dive in!

The three Gili islands: which one to choose?

The Gili Islands are made up of three small islands off the northwest coast of Lombok: Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno. Each one has its own charm, so choose carefully depending on the experience you’re looking for. Or, even better, visit all three and then compare the pros and cons.
Gili Trawangan: the party island
We might have used a little clickbait here, but the truth is, if you love parties, a young atmosphere, and lively nights, Gili Trawangan (or Gili T) is your island. Here, you’ll find beachfront bars, beach parties, and a large community of backpackers—all ingredients for long days (and nights, of course).
But it’s not all about partying: diving in Gili Trawangan is spectacular. Its waters are teeming with sea turtles, coral reefs, and vibrant marine life. You can also snorkel, go paddleboarding, or simply relax on its stunning beaches.
Gili Air: the perfect balance of relaxation and fun

If you’re looking for a more peaceful atmosphere but still want some nightlife, Gili Air is your best option. It’s ideal for couples or travelers who want to enjoy beautiful beaches without the hustle and bustle of Gili Trawangan.
Here, you can snorkel right from the shore, take yoga classes, and enjoy cozy little cafés. If you want to take your diving experience to the next level, the island offers crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life. In the evening, you’ll find live music bars, but without the craziness of the neighboring island.
Gili Meno: the quiet and romantic island
If what you’re after is absolute peace, deserted beaches, and a romantic atmosphere, then Gili Meno is for you. It’s the smallest and least developed of the three, perfect for honeymooners or travelers who want to disconnect.
Gili Meno is famous for its incredible diving and snorkeling sites, especially the famous Jason deCaires Taylor Underwater Museum, where you’ll find submerged statues covered in coral.
That said, as we mentioned, since you're there, why not try all three options and experience the Gili Islands in their three unique atmospheres?
How to get to the Gili islands?
Getting to the Gili Islands is easy and even comfortable, whether you’re coming from Bali, with multiple options and ports to choose from, or from Lombok, just a short distance away. Keep in mind that the Gili Islands are a popular destination, so it’s a good idea to book in advance. You have two main options:
- From Bali: You can take a fast boat from Padang Bai (about 1.5 to 2.5 hours travel).
- From Lombok: You can take a boat from Bangsal (only 15-30 minutes travel).
Fast boats are usually the most comfortable option, but if you're on a budget, you can opt for the public ferry from Lombok.
What to do in the Gili Islands?

Beyond relaxing on the beach with a fresh coconut in hand, there are plenty of things to do on these islands:
- Dive or snorkel: The marine life in the Gili Islands is incredible. Don’t miss the turtles at Turtle Point. At DPM Diving, we have a diving school in Gili, so you’ll have the chance to dive with professionals who have over 10 years of experience.
- Bike around: There are no cars or motorcycles on the Gili Islands, so the best way to get around is by bike.
- Enjoy the swings in the sea: The famous swings in the water can be found on almost every Gili beach. A photo is a must!
- Watch the sunset on the beach: Gili’s sunsets are magical, especially from Gili Trawangan.
- Take yoga classes: On Gili Air and Gili Meno, you’ll find yoga studios with spectacular views.
- Go on a boat tour: A snorkeling tour around the three islands is one of the best activities you can do.
Where to stay?
Accommodation in the Gili Islands ranges from budget bungalows to luxury resorts. There’s something for every budget. Some recommended options:
- Gili Trawangan: Vila Ombak (luxury) or Gili Castle (backpacker-friendly).
- Gili Air: Manta Dive Gili Air (divers) or Slow Villas (romantic).
- Gili Meno: Mahamaya Boutique Resort (exclusive) or Gili Meno Eco Hostel (budget-friendly).
What’s the best time to visit the Gili islands?

The best time to visit the Gili Islands is during the dry season, from May to October. During these months, the weather is perfect, with sunny days and calm seas.
If you prefer to avoid crowds, the months of April and November are ideal since there are fewer tourists and prices drop.
However, any time can be a good time to visit the Gili Islands. The worst you might experience is a few showers throughout the day or slightly choppy seas.
Do you need a visa for the Gili islands?
If you’re traveling from many countries, Indonesia offers a visa exemption for short stays (up to 30 days). If you plan to stay longer, you will need a tourist visa.
It’s important to check the regulations before traveling, as they may change depending on your nationality.
What currency is used in Gili?
The official currency in the Gili Islands (and all of Indonesia) is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While some places accept US dollars or euros, it’s best to carry rupiahs in cash, as ATMs are limited and sometimes not working.
The Gili Islands are a unique tropical paradise in Indonesia. Whether you’re looking for party, adventure, or simply to disconnect from the world, you’ll find your ideal spot here.
So, if you dream of diving with turtles, watching breathtaking sunsets, and enjoying the serenity of the sea, the Gili Islands are waiting for you!
