Is Gili Trawangan actually good for diving?
Short answer: yes. Longer answer: also yes. It’s one of those places where you can have super easy dives or get into currents and a bit more action, all within the same area. Plus, turtles are basically part of the deal.
How much does diving cost in Gili Trawangan?
It’s pretty standard across the island. A Discover Scuba Dive usually sits around IDR 1,200,000–1,500,000. The Open Water course is roughly IDR 5,000,000–6,500,000. And if you’re already certified, fun dives are around IDR 500,000–700,000 per dive. Not bad for what you get, to be fair.
I’ve never dived before—can I start in Gili?
Yep, no problem at all. Loads of people try diving for the first time here. You can do a beginner experience or jump straight into a course. Instructors are used to it, so you’ll be in good hands.
Are the currents strong in Gili Trawangan?
Sometimes, yeah. That’s actually part of what makes diving here fun. But don’t worry—there are plenty of calm sites too, and dive centers will always match the dive to your level. No one’s throwing you into the deep end (literally).
Will I see turtles while diving in Gili Trawangan?

What’s the vibe like compared to Gili Air?
Gili T is more lively, for sure. More people, more going on, a bit more energy overall. Gili Air is quieter and more laid-back. Diving-wise, they’re pretty similar—it’s more about what you want outside the water.

Diving in Gili Trawangan: what to expect
Diving in Gili Trawangan is a bit of a mix—in a good way. It’s the liveliest of the Gili Islands above water, but once you drop below the surface, everything slows right down.
The diving here is pretty varied. You’ve got easy, chilled-out sites that are perfect for beginners, and then some proper drift dives where currents add a bit of excitement. It keeps things interesting, especially if you’re planning to dive more than just a couple of days.
Marine life doesn’t disappoint either. Turtles are almost a given, reefs are healthy and colorful, and there’s always a chance of spotting reef sharks or something a bit bigger passing by.

Best dive sites around Gili Trawangan
Gili Trawangan has access to some of the best dive spots in the area, many shared with Gili Air and Gili Meno. Here are a few you’ll probably hear about:
- Shark Point: one of the top sites around. Expect currents, plenty of fish, and a good chance of seeing reef sharks.
- Turtle Heaven: yes, turtles again—and lots of them. Great For all levels.
- Halik Reef: perfect for drift diving, with long coral slopes and tons of marine life.
- Deep Turbo: Stronger currents and bigger fish action.
- Bounty Wreck: shallow, fun, and packed with life—good for beginners and relaxed dives.
There’s enough variety here to keep things fresh, whether you’re doing your first dive or your fiftieth.
What diving courses can you do in Gili Trawangan?
Pretty much everything. You can start with a Discover Scuba Dive if you just want to try it out, or go for the Open Water certification, which is the most popular option.
From there, it’s all open: Advanced courses, Rescue Diver, specialties like Nitrox or Deep Diving, and even Divemaster programs if you’re thinking of staying longer (which happens… a lot).
Dive centers (also we) here are used to all kinds of divers, so whether you want a relaxed learning pace or something a bit more intensive, you’ll find it.
Is Gili Trawangan good for beginner divers?
Yes—but it’s worth knowing what to expect.
There are plenty of beginner-friendly dive sites with calm conditions, so learning here is absolutely doable. At the same time, some sites have stronger currents, which makes it a great place to progress once you’ve got the basics down.
Most instructors will ease you into it, starting simple and building up your confidence dive by dive.
So yeah, good for beginners—but also a place where you can level up quickly.
