The SSI Scuba Diver course in Phi Phi certifies divers to 12 metres under instructor supervision. Gear, insurance and lunch are included for 8,500 THB.
About the programme
The SSI Scuba Diver course at DPM Diving in Koh Phi Phi is a one-day programme that provides the first scuba certification, valid worldwide to a maximum depth of 12 metres. It covers approximately half of the Open Water Diver course content — the same theory modules and pool skills — and can be upgraded to full Open Water Diver at any time, anywhere in the world. The programme includes theory, confined-water skills and open-water dives to the 12-metre limit with a professional SSI instructor in attendance at all times.
A short multiple-choice exam at the end of the programme completes the certification. Unlike the Open Water Diver (which allows independent diving with a certified buddy), the Scuba Diver certification requires diving with a professional instructor or dive guide at all times — it is a supervised entry-level certification. The price of 8,500 THB includes all dive equipment, the SSI Scuba Diver international lifetime certification, a professional instructor, dive insurance and lunch.
A National Marine Park Fee of 600 THB applies (paid separately in cash). A standard SSI medical questionnaire is completed before water entry. Minimum age: 10 years.

Where the Scuba Diver course dives in Koh Phi Phi
Twelve metres is a comfortable ceiling on the limestone sites around Phi Phi Leh. Pileh Wall is the obvious choice: the cliffs beside Pileh Lagoon carry straight on underwater, so the wall is already spectacular in the first ten metres, dressed in soft coral and sea fans, with moray eels in the cracks and blacktip reef sharks cruising past.
Maya Corner, near the northern entrance to Maya Bay, offers the same shallow coral slopes with turtles and clouds of tropical fish. Both are around six kilometres from our centre in Tonsai Bay, and the calm dry-season months from November to April keep the surface flat for a one-day programme.
Dive sites are chosen on the day according to weather and sea conditions.

Can I upgrade my Scuba Diver certification to Open Water later?
Yes. The SSI Scuba Diver is a subset of the Open Water course. You can upgrade to the full Open Water Diver certification at any time and at any SSI dive centre worldwide — the skills and dives you completed on the Scuba Diver course count towards the upgrade.
