Advanced Adventurer Course
Five specialty dives in two days, a certification to 30 metres, and not a single written exam. The fastest way to open up the dive sites your Open Water card cannot reach.
Contact us on WhatsAppWhat is the Advanced Adventurer course?
The Advanced Adventurer is the SSI programme that comes right after the Open Water, and it is deliberately hands-on: no theory classes, no written exam, just five dives with your instructor reviewing your performance after each one. In two days you go from 18 to 30 metres of certified depth and you come out a noticeably better diver.
Each of the five dives is a taster of a different SSI specialty. Perfect Buoyancy sorts out your trim, weighting and air consumption. Navigation teaches you the compass and natural references. The Deep Dive takes you to 30 metres with gas planning and narcosis awareness. The other two depend on where you dive: a wreck and a night dive in Koh Tao, Fish ID and Waves, Tides and Currents in Indonesia, where reading the current is a genuinely useful skill.
The only requirement is a valid Open Water Diver certification from any recognised agency. If you got it more than six months ago, we usually suggest a refresh dive first so you enjoy the course instead of spending day one remembering how everything works.

The five adventure dives
Perfect Buoyancy
Trim, weighting and air consumption. The dive that changes the most for most divers: you stop fighting the water, you use less gas and your dives get longer without doing anything else differently.
Navigation
Compass work and natural navigation. You learn to run a heading, follow a reef line and come back to the boat on purpose rather than by luck, which is the skill that makes you useful to your buddy.
Deep Dive
Your first controlled descent to 30 metres, with gas planning, no-decompression limits and narcosis awareness. In Koh Tao we run it at pinnacles like Chumphon or Southwest that drop well beyond that depth.
Wreck or night dive
In Koh Tao you dive the HTMS Sattakut, a decommissioned navy vessel sitting between 18 and 30 metres, and the night dive at Japanese Gardens introduces torch technique and low-light navigation in calm, sheltered water.
Fish ID, waves, tides and currents
The Indonesian version of the last two dives. Fish ID teaches you to recognise the reef species you keep seeing, and the currents dive is real training in reading conditions and drift diving, which is exactly what Nusa Penida demands.
Your two days, step by step
Day 1
A short briefing with your instructor and the first three adventure dives. Usually buoyancy and navigation come first, because everything else gets easier once those two are solid, followed by the third dive of the programme.
Day 2
Briefing and the last two adventure dives, including the deep dive to 30 metres. Your instructor debriefs after each one, and at the end of the day your SSI Advanced Adventurer certification is registered digitally.

Advanced Adventurer, Advanced Open Water or full specialties?
Advanced Adventurer is the SSI name for what other agencies call the Advanced Open Water. The structure is the same idea: five adventure dives, a deep dive to 30 metres, no exam, and a certification recognised worldwide that lets you join deeper dives and more demanding sites. If you already hold an Open Water from another agency, this is the course that continues your training, and your new card is accepted everywhere in exactly the same way.
It is not the same as taking the full specialties. Each of the five dives corresponds to the first dive of a complete specialty programme, so it is a guided taster rather than a full qualification in deep diving, wreck diving or navigation. That is the point: you find out which ones you actually enjoy before committing days and money to them, and if you later take the full course, the dive you already did counts towards it. Divers who know they want to go deep should look at the Deep Diving specialty, which certifies you to 40 metres, the recreational limit.

Frequently asked questions about the Advanced Adventurer course
What is the difference between Advanced Adventurer and Advanced Open Water?
They are the same level with different names: Advanced Adventurer is the SSI programme and Advanced Open Water is what other agencies call theirs. Both are five adventure dives, a certification to 30 metres and recognition worldwide.
Do I need the Advanced to dive to 30 m?
Yes, or an equivalent. Your Open Water certifies you to 18 metres, and the Advanced Adventurer extends that to 30. A single Deep Adventure dive with an instructor also gets you there, but without the full certification.
How long does the Advanced Adventurer course take?
Two days and five dives. There are no theory classes and no written exam, so the whole course happens in the water with a briefing and a debrief around each dive.
Can I choose which adventure dives to do?
Partly. Perfect Buoyancy, Navigation and the Deep Dive are the core, and the other two depend on the school: wreck and night dive in Koh Tao, Fish ID and Waves, Tides and Currents in Indonesia. Ask us and we will tell you what is running on your dates.
Do the adventure dives count towards the full specialties?
Yes. Each adventure dive is the first dive of the equivalent full specialty programme, so it can be credited later if you decide to complete that certification.
Ready to go to 30 metres?
Send us your certification level, your dates and the island you are heading to. We will confirm availability and tell you which five dives you will be doing.
