About the programme

The SSI Open Water Diver course at DPM Diving in Koh Phi Phi is a three-day programme that takes complete beginners to an internationally recognised scuba certification valid to 18 metres worldwide. No prior diving experience is required, and the certification is for life. Course schedule: Day 1 starts at 8am with the first theory session, followed by a confined-water training session finishing around 12pm.

Day 2 includes a brief class at 11:30am followed by two open-water dives. Day 3 involves two more open-water dives (morning or afternoon, subject to the boat schedule). A written multiple-choice exam at the end of day three completes the course.

Theory and reading material are delivered through SSI MyDiveGuide digital study, accessed before and during the course. The price of 12,900 THB includes the SSI Open Water international lifetime certification, full dive equipment, a professional SSI instructor, dive insurance and lunch. A National Marine Park Fee must be paid separately: 600 THB on the first day of dives and 200 THB on the second day (each paid in cash to park authorities at the pier).

A standard SSI medical questionnaire is completed before the course.

Why take the Open Water in Koh Phi Phi

The certification dives use the protected reefs on the Phi Phi Leh side, twenty minutes from the centre. Viking Cave gives a hard and soft coral reef from five to twenty-five metres with juvenile blacktip reef sharks and moray eels, and Malong Bay, next to Maya Bay, is the site where most students meet their first hawksbill turtle.

Both are inside the Marine National Park, both are shallow enough to work skills on the coral slope, and currents are mild almost every day. Water runs 27-30 °C, visibility hits 25-30 metres in March, and the whole reef system is a 20-minute boat ride away, so days are unhurried.

Dive sites are chosen on the day according to weather and sea conditions.
