The Try Scuba programme in Koh Tao is a one-day introduction for new divers. It includes a classroom briefing, pool session and two sea dives for 3,600 THB.
About the programme
The Try Scuba Diving programme at DPM Diving in Koh Tao is a one-day introductory experience for anyone who has never dived before and wants to try scuba without committing to a full certification course. No prior diving experience is required. The programme starts at 8:30am with a short classroom session covering the basics of scuba equipment and the safety rules you need before entering the water.
You then head out on the boat for two dives in the Gulf of Thailand. A professional instructor accompanies you throughout both dives, guiding you through equalisation, breathing technique and simple underwater movement. The programme finishes around 4:30pm.
The price of 3,600 THB covers the programme, a professional dive instructor and all diving equipment. A standard medical questionnaire is completed before the session. Participants with pre-existing cardiac or respiratory conditions should consult a doctor before joining any in-water activity, as required by SSI guidelines.
Try Scuba does not result in a certification. If you want to continue diving after this experience, the SSI Open Water Diver course is the natural next step and includes a credit for the Try Scuba session against its theory and pool components. Bookings via WhatsApp.
Why try scuba diving in Koh Tao
Your two sea dives happen in Japanese Garden, the sheltered bay 1.5 km northwest of the school, where the bottom sits between 2 and 16 metres over sand and coral gardens. There is almost never a current there, the water holds 27-30 °C all year and a 3 mm shorty is plenty, so the only thing you have to think about is breathing.
The boat leaves from Mae Haad, a hundred metres from our door, so there is no transfer to organise. Expect anemonefish, parrotfish, butterflyfish and a decent chance of a green turtle. From March to September the dry season pushes visibility towards 25-30 metres, which is when a first dive looks its best.
Dive sites are chosen on the day according to weather and sea conditions.
