SSI Open Water Diver Course in Koh Tao
SSI Open Water Diver is the first scuba certification, valid worldwide to 18 metres. In Koh Tao it takes three days and six dives. Through November and December 2026, the same price includes three free nights in a shared room.

About the programme
The Open Water Diver course is the first full scuba certification, qualifying you to dive independently to a maximum depth of 18 metres worldwide. At DPM Diving in Koh Tao, the course runs over three days and is delivered under the SSI (Scuba Schools International) agency, resulting in an internationally recognised lifetime certification. The course structure covers three components: digital theory completed before or during the course, confined-water skill sessions in shallow water to practise breathing underwater, buoyancy control, mask clearing and equipment handling, and four open-water dives in the Gulf of Thailand where skills are applied at depth.
Koh Tao offers clear, warm water with visibility typically between 10 and 25 metres, making it well suited to entry-level training. DPM Diving includes full equipment in the course fee — wetsuit, BCD, regulator, mask, fins and dive computer — so no prior equipment purchase is necessary. All courses are run by certified SSI instructors.
A standard SSI medical statement is completed before water entry; participants with pre-existing cardiac or respiratory conditions should consult a doctor before enrolling, as required by SSI standards. On completion, your SSI Open Water certification is registered in the SSI Digital system and valid globally for life, with no renewal required. Once certified, you can dive with any operator worldwide to the Open Water depth limit of 18 metres.
In November and December 2026, the course includes 3 nights of accommodation in a shared room at the same price, for trips until 31 December 2026.
Why take the Open Water in Koh Tao
The four open-water dives are built around the island's western training grounds. The first two usually use the sandy patches of Japanese Garden between five and twelve metres, where you can kneel, hover and clear a mask without any current. The last two, conditions permitting, usually go to White Rock or Shark Island, where the reef steps down to the 18-metre limit of the certification over garden eels, barracuda and blacktip reef sharks.
Water sits at 27-30 °C twelve months a year and visibility averages 18 metres, opening to 30 in the dry season. Whale sharks pass through in March-May and August-September. Our own hostel and bar are 100 metres from Mae Haad beach if you want to sleep where you dive.
Dive sites are chosen on the day according to weather and sea conditions.
