SSI Scuba Diver Course in Koh Tao
The SSI Scuba Diver course certifies Koh Tao divers to 12 metres under supervision in one day. Equipment and a lifetime SSI certification are included for 8,600 THB.

About the programme
The SSI Scuba Diver course at DPM Diving in Koh Tao is a one-day programme that provides the first scuba certification, valid worldwide to a maximum depth of 12 metres. It covers approximately half of the Open Water Diver course content — the same theory modules and pool skills — and can be upgraded to a full Open Water certification at any time and at any SSI centre worldwide. The programme runs in one day, structured around a theory module on equipment, dive physics and safety procedures; a confined-water skills session covering mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy and equalisation; and open-water dives to the 12-metre limit with a professional SSI instructor in attendance throughout.
Unlike the Open Water Diver certification (which allows independent diving with a certified buddy), the Scuba Diver certification requires diving with a professional instructor or dive guide at all times. Price: 8,600 THB, including the SSI Scuba Diver international lifetime certification, full dive equipment, a professional SSI instructor and dive insurance for the course duration. A standard SSI medical questionnaire is completed before water entry; participants with pre-existing cardiac or respiratory conditions should consult a doctor first.
Minimum age: 10 years (SSI Junior Scuba Diver, supervised, with the same 12-metre limit). No prior diving experience is required. Bookings via WhatsApp.
Where the Scuba Diver course dives in Koh Tao
The 12-metre limit of this certification matches Twins, three kilometres west of Mae Haad: two granite pinnacles rising from 18 metres to five, ringed with anemones, juvenile fish and a resident triggerfish or two. The shallow sandy stretches of Japanese Garden usually serve for the skill circuits, with flat ground under your fins and no current to fight.
Both sites are inside the calm western bays, which is why Koh Tao works so well in a single day: short boat ride, water at 28-30 °C, and an 18-metre average visibility that climbs through the dry months. Morning departures usually give the clearest water before the day boats arrive.
Dive sites are chosen on the day according to weather and sea conditions.

What is the difference between the Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver courses?
The SSI Scuba Diver is a subset of the Open Water course — it takes one day and certifies you to dive to 12 metres with a professional always present. The Open Water Diver course takes three days, certifies you to 18 metres, and allows you to dive independently with a buddy. The Scuba Diver can be upgraded to Open Water at any time, anywhere in the world.
